Visual Design

"Going Green" immediately grabs your attention when looking at this page.  The white color of the text, placed in a dark area of the image creates very nice contrast that helps tie in the white cabinets.  Also the use of different fonts helps to lead your eye down the page from the image to the text below.

This page has many things that connect the images and the text, I think.  The contrast of the white and dark walls in the larger image caught my eye first in the layout.  Using the green in the larger image in the text below the image and also using the shape of the candle holder from the image beside the text ties it together.  While the shape of the candle holder comes from the top image the color of it ties together with the smaller image.  I think over all the composition of the page works well.

I chose this image because it set a very clear mood as soon as you eyes hit the page.  It is very calm and relaxing.  The use of different font types create a sense of hierarchy and more importance over other words.  Also the border around the outside of the page ties the picture to the text.

Many Moods - Playful

Immigrant Collage

Anna Polan, formerly known as, Ania Piecyzkolan
Anna's grandfather came to the USA in the 20's and had 3 kids here. He then went back to Poland and had more children there. After the war, the citizens of the USA were allowed to come back, so she came back in 1967. Her siblings who were currently residing in the USA sponsored her to come back, which guaranteed a job/school. Her reason for coming to the USA was for economical reasons. Post-war, 5 of them basically lived in one room with no bathroom or showers. Housing was much cheaper here. Her dad was the first to come and three other sisters came later.

Her parents had to work in the factories and “sweatshops” and her goal was to not have to do that. She didn’t want to have to work hard labor like them. Her primary goal was to get an education and not have to worry about money.

Her life wasn’t that much different after she came to the USA
-she lived in a Polish community
-first thing her dad bought was a car
-everything was still based around family
-they traveled a lot more once they got here because they had a car

She describes her biggest challenge as a culture shock. It wasn’t what was expected. She had a vision of “gold on the streets” but it wasn’t clean and it wasn’t as easy as she thought it was gonna be. She basically came with 25 dollars and everything her mother could pack.
“Working hard and saving money was everything.”
-how people dressed and the music was a big change – (the 60’s)
when MLK died
-war
-Her dad went to work with her uncle
-Her mom worked in a kitchen
-January 17, 1967 was the day they moved
“...came on Sunday and went to school on Monday.” She was out of school for 2 months in Poland so her dad said they had enough vacation it was time to go back to school once they got to the US
She was 11 when they came to the US

She met her husband, George, when she was 17. He lived on the street next to them and he came over to look at her house and wound up asking her out. George is now the Vice President of Research and Development for Reliable Automatic Sprinkler Company. Anna works as a nurse for Cancer Centers of the Carolinas. They had four children together.

Likes & Dislikes:
Poland- every town has a castle and there are little places where u can sit everywhere

USA- she doesn’t like the walmart type stores—there is no variety
-everything is the same everywhere
-people all talk the same, the news is the same...
- no history: everything old gets torn down to build something new
She says that she is more American now than she is Polish, though she still speaks Polish to relatives.

Pattern Perception

Using Photoshop I took the side of a building that had windows and columns and created a flower like pattern. Using the columns as the "Petals" and the blue of the sky reflecting off the windows to create the center point of the flower. I found this assignment much more difficult to do on my own than it seemed it was going to be in class. After being shown how to use photoshop it is a challenge to remember all the buttons to push out of the thousands that are available to use.

Response to Computing in Architectural Design

The development of the computer programs originally were for supporting the needs of mechanical engineering but over time it became more involved with architectural design. Computer systems began to appear in architectural practices in the early 1970s. The early computers were large and expensive. The first CAD system was developed for a Macintosh and although they were easy to learn how to use, the programs capabilities were far too limited for professional architects to draft with. On the other hand the second CAD program was much more advanced and was actually known as a drafting and modeling systems.
The advancements in computer technology and programs today enable designers to work at a faster and easier pace. Computing allows work to be done in less time and allows for changes to be made much easier. For example, some programs have building codes embedded into them, therefore, when creating a structure within this program you will know if something is structurally incorrect without having to look it up. Another advantage to computing would be that instead of having to keep track of several papers and tools, all your work would be saved in one location. While storing your work digitally can make it more convenient to locate and alter your work it also eliminates the use of large amounts of paper waste that may occur during the work process. This parallels the idea of the world becoming more involved in going “green”.
